Artist Statement
“I am drawn to the varied architecture in and around the city where there are dark shadows and bright lights. I am especially fond of the mood in an early Sunday morning. Painting my interpretation of scenes depicting recognizable buildings while maintaining an air of isolation and mystery is the fuel that urges me on to create another painting. I enjoy the freedom to alter a scene during this creative process and to add life to a scene by placing people and animals here and there when a scene calls for it.”
Denver is unique among our nation’s cities. Its western heritage and culture has started showing itself within my work. We have parades with cowboys and longhorns, our mounted police patrol our parks and streets and Colorado’s dude ranches in the mountains are not far up the pass. Luckily, Denver is a city with many assets and personalities.”
Biography
Marlene was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington. Her mother was a painter, her grandfather a sculptor and her stepfather a writer. They all set examples of creativity around her and encouraged her at a young age to draw. Marlene always knew that painting was her passion. She studied with a number of artists that she admired and that are known worldwide.

• Marlene has paintings in private collections throughout the United States. Her painting of the Broadmoor Hotel hangs in the CEO’s office on the first floor of the hotel. One of her latest commissioned paintings hangs in the foyer of KEW Realty on Jackson St. in Cherry Creek. Her painting in the annual Plein Aire Show at the Denver Public Library in 2007 was chosen to grace the cover of the 25th Annual Rare & Not-So-Rare Book and Art Auction invitation and auction booklet in February of 2008 and she also participated in the miniature show at Abend Gallery that same year. She has participated in the outdoor Festival in Castle Rock, the People’s Fair in Civic Center Park, The Old Saybrook, Ct. Summer Art Festival and the Summer Art Market at the Art Student’s League in Denver. Marlene was invited to participate in the annual Mask Project in 2008 and again in 2010 - an extraordinary event whose profits benefit Denver Hospice. In August & September 2011 she had
a one-woman show at Mid Mod & More Urban Gallery, 1716 Boulder St. in Denver & she and the gallery donated from her sales to the "Nite Owl Program" at the Fisher Early Learning Center.
